In June 2026, RBINS organised an experts-negotiators dialogue dedicated to the latest series of CO-OP4CBD technical briefs supporting biodiversity policy implementation.

Bringing together UN CBD experts and SBSTTA negotiators, this event provided a stage for discussions on some of the main biodiversity challenges in the implementation of the KMGBF.

During this meeting, experts part of the authors’ team shared their expertise and insights on the following six technical briefs (TB):

• TB on Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Restoration: Philine zu Ermgasssen delved into the opportunities and challenges of marine ecosystems restoration.
• TB on Polar Ecosystems: Clara Manno (British Antarctic Survey) explained how climate changes in Polar Regions affect progress towards KMGBF targets.
• TB on Digital Sequence Information (DSI) & the Cali Fund: Liliana Ballesteros-Mejia (MNHN) highlighted the role of DSI for scientific research and the benefit-sharing of these resources.
• TB on EBSAs & BBNJ: Jan-Claas Dajka (HIFMB) explored the role of Ecologically or Biologically Significant Marine Areas in informing the BBNJ Agreement and broader ocean governance. 
• TB on Indigenous and Traditional Territories & ICCAs: Kinga Öllerer (HUN-REN CER) showcased the contributions of Indigenous Peoples’ and local communities in achieving KMGBF’s Target 3.
• TB on Business & Biodiversity: Jorge L. Ventocilla (RBINS) focused on the lessons learned from the IPBES Business and Biodiversity Assessment to advance biodiversity mainstreaming into business for the KMGBF.

These presentations highlighted the importance of bringing scientific expertise directly into biodiversity negotiations as preparations for the forthcoming COP17 in Armenia.
