An overview of SBSTTA-27: discussions and results
From 20-24 October 2025 the 27th Meeting of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific Technical and Technological Advice of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SBSTTA-27) was held in Panama City, Panama.
During the meeting, Parties discussed themes, including:
- links between biodiversity and climate change
- invasive alien species
- biodiversity and health
- risk assessment of living modified organisms
- assessments provided by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
A crucial outcome of the meeting was outlining the first global review of collective progress towards implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). This report will:
- Provide an overview of the status of biodiversity and its trends
- Summarise the status of biodiversity strategies and action plans, targets and report submissions on national level
- Evaluate collective progress in the implementation of KMGBF’s 23 targets and 4 goals
- Review the provision of means of implementation consistent with the KMGBF
- Assess the contributions of relevant multilateral or international agreements, organisations and processes towards the implementation of the KMGBF.
The global review of the collective progress and the results of the meetings will be further discussed at COP17 in Armenia next year.
Alongside the conference, numerous side events took place. One of them, titled “Enhancing the role of knowledge holders in CBD: pioneering capacity-building initiatives across the world”, was co-hosted by CO-OP4CBD and Biodiversa+ on the last day of the meeting.
